Somalia is at the heart of the Al Hasanaat Foundationʼs humanitarian mission. Plagued by protracted conflict, displacement, political instability, and climate change, Somaliaʼs population faces one of the worst humanitarian crises the world has ever seen.

Children are starving to death before our eyes

UN WFP, 6/22/2022

Devastated by extreme drought wreaking havoc across the Horn of Africa, Somaliaʼs population is currently facing catastrophic hunger. With a poor start to the current Deyr rains and a high probability of below-average rainfall for the remainder of the year, Somalia is on the brink of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Climate change has severely impacted agricultural productivity, leaving millions of Somalis dependent on humanitarian assistance for their basic survival.

The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by political instability, widespread conflict, and the occupation by Islamic extremist insurgency Al Shabaab. Frequent attacks occur throughout the war-torn nation, targeting civilians, security forces, and government institutions. Conflict and insecurity have forced millions of Somalis to flee their homes, leading to significant internal displacement and refugee outflows.

Displaced populations are often forced to live in refugee camps, with limited access to food, water, adequate shelter, healthcare, and education.

“Puntland alone received an estimated 300,000 internally displaced persons since the beginning of the year”

Internally displaced persons are forced to seek shelter in refugee camps, where they face inhumane living conditions and a widespread lack of access to food, water, sanitation, and healthcare. Contaminated water sources and inadequate sanitation contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases, while a critical shortage in basic food supplies causes thousands of famine-related deaths every day.

Amid the driest conditions in over 4 decades, climate change is compounding persistent insecurity and instability in Somalia. For millions of Somalis trapped in a hunger emergency, humanitarian assistance is their last lifeline.
